Establishment of management system of PCB (polychlorinated biphenyls) – contaminated electrical equipment

March 2007- October 2008: “Establishment of management system of PCB (polychlorinated biphenyls) – contaminated electrical equipment”

Beneficiary: Government of the Republic of Macedonia
Financing Agency: Government of the Federal Republic of Germany and GTZ
National Execution Agency: POPs Unit
Project costs: EUR 400,000
Project duration: 2006-2008

The goal of this Project was developing and establishing an efficient management system of the electrical equipment containing PCB, through recording and monitoring that would lead to ecologically-acceptable elimination of the equipment.

Three demo locations were encompassed in the Project: Silmak, MZT and Rade Koncar where the following activities were performed:

  • Temporary storage of electrical transformers and condensers that contain polychlorinated biphenyls.
  • Appropriate disposal of electrical transformers and condensers that contain polychlorinated biphenyls
  • Ensure safe handling of the equipment containing polychlorinated biphenyls.
  • Raising public awareness with regard to the safe handling of the equipment containing polychlorinated biphenyls.
  • Development of the concept of future waste management
  • Recording and analysis of the equipment containing polychlorinated biphenyls.
  • Methods for remediation of the locations contaminated with polychlorinated biphenyls.

This Project was supported by GTZ and was executed in collaboration with Envio recycling GmbH.
