January 2005 – July 2010: Activities for identifying the most suitable solution for remediation of HCC (lindane) in Ohis, Skopje
Beneficiary: Government of the Republic of North Macedonia
Financing Agency: Government of the Italian Republic, Government of the Czech Republic, European Agency of Reconstruction
National Execution Agency: POPs Unit/Ministry of Environment and Physical Planning
Project costs: EUR 550,000
Project duration: 2005-2010
Preliminary activities for investigation of the historical OHIS-site contamination with the isomers of hexachlorocyclohexane (HCH), as a by-product of the lindane production, were realized under the National Implementation Plan (NIP) for reduction and elimination of POPs in Republic of Macedonia, where the removal of hexachlorocyclohexane, has been identified as thirteenth priority.
Examination of the soil was performed to determine the exact quantities landfilled in the area of OHIS, as well as the degree of contamination of soil and other mediums. On account of this, several feasibility studies were conducted (UNEP 2001, Eptisa 2007, Enacon 2007-2008, D’appolonia 2010). The goal of these studies was to create conceptual designs for remediation of HCH (lindane) in OHIS.
Certain number of investigations and analysis were performed to serve as basis for the feasibility studies, that evaluate and propose alternative solutions for remediation, such as reduction and/or elimination of the risks related to the presence of HCH in the dumps (surface, as well as deep layers of the soil contaminated with HCH) and their surroundings.
